Maldivian Research

Number of Maldivian PhD dissertations by year and by gender of the researcher

Scholarly pursuit of Maldivians

It is recognized that Maldivians travel far and wide to achieve higher education, mainly for the lack of opportunity in the Maldives. With the emergence of the Maldives National University in 2011, the number of academic research projects carried out as part of higher education has also increased. However, to date most such research projects are carried in the name of a one-semester research project attached to a Bachelor Degree. The first Maldivian Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program was launched in 2013 and the graduates from this initiative, I believe, will soon be adding their work to the body of Maldivian HDR output. It is widely known that Maldives now has a highly educated proportion of its population and a very rough guess would be that among estimated 350,000 population of the country, we now have over a 100 scholars who have completed a PhD.

Word cloud of the thesis topics (summarizes: the predominance of Maldives as a case in Maldivian PhD research with a the focus on education and development)

I find it quite fascinating the varied topics these scholars pursue and write upon. There do not appear to exist a comprehensive list of the type of research that has been carried out on Maldives. Neither is there any comprehensive information about Maldivians who have pursued a higher degree by research and thereby contributing to knowledge creation. Understanding the academic strength and rigor of Maldivian community has been a key variable in my effort to study the Googling phenomenon and how Maldivians interplay into that.

Therefore, to address that gap, this compilation is my attempt at trying to gather a list of dissertations/theses produced by Maldivians.

Basic search strategy

I have capitalized on the access to the discovery tool of Curtin University Library that I have as a student/staff at Curtin. Curtin library catalog search with the term “Maldives” and subgroup “dissertation” surprisingly retrieved 2,598 results. I narrowed it down by specifying “Maldives” in the title field and it reduced the results to 12. I skimmed the 2000+ list and I did find quite a lot of relevant references which were not counted among the smaller list. Nonetheless, the bulk of it were not relevant.

A Google search took me to “the Global ETD Search service” and I managed to find quite a large number of theses indexed in that search platform. In their introduction they say:

“The Global ETD Search service is a free service for researchers to find electronic theses and dissertations. This service is provided by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. Our metadata is collected from universities around the world.”

I used a very simple search logic most of the time: using “Maldives” as a subject – ETG retrieved 410 results. A few records were duplicates (most probably as they were being crawled from different databases). A significant proportion was theses written around a Maldives related topic, but by foreign authors. At first, I was not paying attention to these due to time constraints and therefore, I have not captured all the foreign authored Maldivian related theses that I came across. Nonetheless, with some of the topics (because of personal interest) I started to make a note of those and eventually started adding selected theses to my list even if they were not local authors.

Another similar search tool that professes to search theses and dissertations from across the world is OATD.org. A search on “Maldives” limiting to the title field retrieved 73 results and there were quite an overlap with other retrieved results, with 12 new results I could add to my list.

I also used Trove, the Australian Union Catalogue by the National Library of Australia. Trove brings together content from libraries, museums, archives, repositories and other research and collecting organizations in Australia. With Trove, I used “Maldives” in the title field and limited it to “thesis”, which retrieved 78 results. Unlike the other two search portals, Trove gave me more relevant results. WorldCat proved be very useful too.

Google Scholar and Google general search was useful in looking up results further, with known authors or titles. Sometimes, particular details that were not available on the specialized database/search-tool was made clear by a Google search which produced more results around that particular topic or author – sometimes also linking to free social-network-type repositories like academia or ResearchGate.

The limitation in this search approach is that if someone had not written on a topic specific to Maldives, those theses will not be retrieved. For example Shaaly (2013) on the list is there only because I know her and knew she had written a thesis and had an idea which university library to search on. Additionally the search even on the ETD search engine was not exhaustive as their crawlers can only reach to those universities that have joined their network. To overcome these limitations, at least to some degree, additional references were sought by searching for known authors and their work identified through prior research, personal knowledge, and/or reference lists of selected publications. Some of these specific searches were across the the digital thesis search on University of Otago, Manchester University, University of New South Wales, Stanford University, to name a few. After I posted the first iteration of this post, I have received some names of scholars who studied in Malaysia and therefore have been able to update the list further by searching through the IIUM library.

Academic research on the Maldives or by Maldivians

The following is a bibliography of research output by Maldivians in the form of theses/dissertations. It is not meant to be exhaustive, given time constraints as well as limitations on searching the deep web as well as lack of online presence of other work. Any contribution from readers to build on this list will be very much appreciated.

Where I was able to determine, I have used the full title of the award instead of merely identifying it as PhD or Masters.

This cursory attempt has gathered citations to 141 Doctorate theses and 138 Masters/Honors theses written by Maldivian scholars affiliated to overseas universities. Quite a lot of these scholarly work are available online. Do note that the URL provided in the citations is not necessarily to the actual work, but some of them are catalogue links.

The gender representation of researchers is something that fascinates me and I had to convert it into statistics. Looking at the PhD researchers (for the data collected so far, represented graphically at the top of this page), the first Maldivian male to do his research was in 1987 while the first Maldivian female researcher gained a PhD almost a decade later, in 1996. From 1987 onward there has  been a steady number of men completing their PhD, while the second Maldivian woman achieved a PhD qualification in 2001. As at 2016 (based on the citations collected here) there are 85 male researchers and 54 female researchers with a PhD qualification. Looking at the polynomial trend-line, it can be inferred that Maldivian women researchers perhaps could make up for the lost time and have an equal representation in comparison to their male counterparts in the near future.

Further searching required

It is certain the collection above is only a fraction of all the theses/dissertations Maldivians have written at overseas universities. However, for now, I have nothing further to go on as I have exhausted all I could search online with the only known parameter of “Maldives” as a subject and as part of title.

Interestingly, the following text left me searching wide and across trying to find a citation for this quite significant claim. It is widely believed that Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan is the first Maldivian to gain a PhD in 1987.

“Abdul Rasheed was born on 16 October 1932, in Malé, in the Maldives, the second of my parents’ seven children. He left the Maldives to study abroad at the age of 14, and spent his entire working life in Canada and the United States. He specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology and had a working interest in the use of hypnotism in childbirth. He held a doctorate of philosophy in hypnotism the first Maldives-born person to be admitted to the degree of doctor of philosophy. He was also the first Maldives-born person to qualify as a medical doctor in the Western tradition.” Majid’s page

Is the catch in the “Maldivian-born” versus “Maldivian citizien”?

I am very thankful for everyone who is showing interest in this attempt. When I first posted this, it had only 78 PhD theses. The list keeps growing with information from interested people sharing names of Maldivians they know who have completed a PhD.

    1. Thanks for the names 🙂
I tried to see if I can find the citation to their research, but so far I haven’t.
It will be helpful if I can get their research topic or the university they studied.

I absolutely do want the list to be as include as possible. Many thanks
